Day 59 - February 28, 2008

So, this has been a pretty mundane day and seriously the highlight of my day was that the sun was still out by the time I got home for work at six. Long sunny days are just around the corner!! Also I think that this all windows building at the end of my street is absolutely ridiculous. Maybe . . . maybe if I lived in Miami, but I live in Brooklyn, and quite frankly this building would be out of place anywhere in the five boroughs.

Day 58- February 27, 2008

So yesterday was my dad's birthday, and I felt bad because I am usually really good about gift giving, but I hadn't really even tried to get him a gift. So I was looking for possible gift ideas, and I found the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. This is a mug with a car adapter so you can plug it in to stay warm in your car. Now besides the fact that both of my parents detest coffee, I can't really imagine who this gift would really be appropriate for. It kinda reminds me of when I was in 4th grade at Smoky Row and we had an Invention Convention and everyone had to come up with a bizarre item that could possibly be a good idea if it weren't quite so odd. I for example invented the two person jump rope. It was sorta cool you had a hook and then you clipped it to your hook and only one person would have to swing it for the other person to be able to jump. I was actually on the local news and everything. I believe from watching the tap later that the news announcer guy said something along the lines of, doesn't it only take one person to operate a jump rope? Inventions are pretty awesome, but I think I'll leave it to people far more creative than I.

Day 57 - February 26, 2008

Tonight, I went to a pseudo book club, I say pseudo because we didn't discuss the book that much. However, we went to a really great wine bar that is not the type of place that I would usually go to, but I clearly enjoyed. Then we went to Barnes and Nobles and picked out a new great book to try. Overall it was a pretty nice Tuesday!

Day 56 - February 25, 2008

I wanted to post this really cool picture that had how many times words were used in Oscar songs, but I couldn't copy the picture so instead, I put the link at the bottom, you should try it. Last night's Oscars just reminded me of how much I loved the movie Once though. This is a picture of them walking down a street in Dublin. I bet this street probably looks pretty similar to the one that my parents live on in England. Check this out: http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20007870_20164475_20170182,00.html

Day 55 - February 24, 2008

Oscar night, quite possibly my second favorite night of the year! Or at the very least second best TV event of the year. Anyway, I meant to take a better picture, but I was too busy laughing hysterically with my friends Rohin and Kumi. Since I hadn't taken a picture they reenacted our attempts to become more knowledgeable about random Oscar knowledge while watching the endless montages! We had a really amazing time and I swear I haven't laughed that hard in a long time.

Oscar Recap
  1. Best moment of the night was when they let the amazing singer from the movie Once, come back on stage because her speech was cut off, she is my hero.
  2. Most ironic: the movie that won best picture No Country For Old Men is the only one that I haven't already seen.
  3. Greatest moment watching the Oscars, singing Just Around the River Bend incredibly off key with Rohin.
I'm so glad I have such amazing friends and that my house was chosen for tonight's venue, because I am exhausted and SO ready to sleep. Good night!

Day 54 - February 23, 2008

Well, I thought that this picture was kinda priceless. The guy on the right is my friend, Ivan and the guy on the left is Ivan's 5th grade cubby buddy and the guy in the middle is a college friend of his. I love New York, it is the great bringing together place. Anyway, in this particular picture it is getting late into the night and we've realized that sitting next to the bathrooms probably wasn't the best idea we ever had, UCK!

Day 53 - February 22, 2008

This is my friend, Jen, who is actually my only friend in New York who I knew before moving out here. Tonight was a chilly Friday night where all the streets were full of puddles and slush and it was really nice to have a quite night in. We watched the movie, Fight Club, which I adore and she had never seen. I love this movie because there is so much to it that it appeals to nearly everyone for one reason or another. Although I've seen it probably 10 times and have a lot of the dialog forever memorized, I still feel a little different every time I watch it. The first rule of fight club is??

Hopefully you enjoy this picture, because it took several takes to get one where we were both presentable!

Day 52 - February 21, 2008

Well this picture is my favorite part of my apartment. It is just a simple piece of Ikea furniture like practically everything in my apartment, but I really love this shelf. I love the Badger frame that my mom gave me, the two music boxes from my music box collection from my Grandma, the pictures of my family, the antique jewelry box that originally belonged to my great grandmother, the bear that goes with a story my mom gave my sisters and I for Christmas and finally the pencil box and books which were gift from really good friends. I really love this shelf and all the memories that it stores for me. I'm sure everyone has a favorite spot in their homes which represents them and makes them feel the way this shelf does for me.

Day 51 - February 20, 2008

Well, it is February break for New York City school children which means that many of my teacher friends are off this week as well. So, I talked my good friend, Katie into coming up to the Upper East Side to have a nice lunch with me. She recommended this really cute vegan place she had been to before called Candle 79. I'm certainly never going to be a vegan, but I really enjoy new places, and it is pretty amazing how colorful and delicious all food can be when you know what you're doing. This was Katie's lunch which I can't remember what it was called, but it had some tempura in it. I had a pumpkin seed and black bean burger with these really good squash sticks and a baby green and avocado salad. It was really funny when I was enjoying with Katie that Obama won Wisconsin which made me very happy, and the waitress said, "really yea!"

Day 50 - February 19, 2008

This is a picture from this weekend, since Tuesday isn't nearly as exciting as a road trip. This is me at the tourist center in Bennington, Vermont. You have to love the moose!

February 18, 2008

Day 49 - February 18, 2008

On the way back to New York, I finally convinced Kumi that going to see a state capital was an excellent idea! I'm not sure that she was ever convinced, but she certainly humored me and arranged for us to stop in Hartford, Connecticut! I love capital cities. Ever since living in Madison, I've always adored everything about state capitals. We drove around the loop in the middle of town and to check out all of the cities main buildings. I'm such a city person!

February 17, 2008

Day 48 - February 17, 2008

So when we finally got the car we were on Route 22 and we asked where we should go. We were told we could go South and end up in the Cascades or go North and end up in Vermont.

We chose Vermont and had a pretty amazing day. This was my absolute favorite picture from the day however! We saw this guy scraping snow off his roof, and just as I turned to take a picture, the towns sleigh ride horses came by. Vermont is so amazing, it is full of organic food, a trillion veggie options of everything and a great quest for fresh from the tree maple syrup. Umm.

February 16, 2008

Day 47 - February 16, 2008

It was a long weekend, so Kumi and I decided that we needed to get out of the city. Kumi's car, however, through a series of unfortunate events had ended up towed and in Copake, New York. So on Saturday, Kumi and I took a train from NYC to Hudson to get the car from Jim's Auto Body. The views from the train were absolutely gorgeous and this is just one of them!

February 15, 2008

Day 46 - February 15, 2008

So today after work I had some phone calls to return, so I walked from 83rd Street and Park Avenue where I work all the way to the 2/3 train at Times Square. Along my walk on Park Avenue I saw all kinds of great things which I had never seen before. This was the Park Avenue Museum, which I didn't even know existed. It is a really great castle looking building though, it reminds me of the Red Gym in Madison. Interesting.

February 14, 2008

Day 45 - February 14, 2008

Happy Valentine's Day! In years past this has certainly been a pretty horrible day, but today was actually really wonderful. My current boss, Chester, brought me the most ridiculous cookie that was shaped like a heart filled with strawberry jelly and both it and me became covered in powdered sugar. Then Kumi and I went to this amazing diner for lunch. It was quite a find on the Upper Eastside.

Then tonight Rohin was my valentine's date. We ate junk food and watched great 90s movies keeping in the tradition of the Spice Girls from this week. Rohin drew this picture at work today. He is doing an internship at a magazine in the city and today they went to interview people in line to buy chocolate at the Godiva store. Unfortunately, they didn't have a camera that worked so he drew a picture to portray what was happening. I thought that it was a great picture to show the day!

February 13, 2008

Day 44 - February 13, 2008

Umm! So for those of you who cook all the time, this is probably pretty boring, but I do not cook very often so it always makes me happy. There is just something about buying everything you need and putting it all together that is immensely satisfying. This is turkey chili and it was excellent!

February 12, 2008

Day 43 - February 12, 2008

So it snowed! However, I'm sure that none of my friends or family in the Midwest finds this exciting at all, since it has done nothing but snow there for the last month! Snow is only pretty while it is snowing in the city, by tomorrow it will all be black slush. Anyway, it was nice to enjoy the beauty while it lasted.

February 11, 2008

Day 42- February 11, 2008
Today was the much anticipated day of the month. That's right it was time for the Spice Girls Reunion tour! It was such an amazing experience. I just really loved the Spice Girls in middle school when they were in their prime, so it was a great opportunity to spend some quality time with Jeet and Rohin and enjoy an outrageous but amazing concert. Also it was in New Jersey at the new Prudential Center. So it was my first time taking the Path Train too! Overall it was amazing and I actually made it home at a decent hour, so that is nice to. People of the world, Spice Up Your Life.

February 10, 2008

Day 41 - February 10, 2008

So I didn't do a great job last week of taking unique pictures, so I am going to be making a stronger effort to do a better job this week.

Today I went over to Cobble Hill to spend a lazy Sunday with my friends Kumi and Abby. Kumi is training to run a marathon this summer, so she was going to run from Cobble Hill to her place on 119th street today as further preparation. We figure this is about 13 miles, so it is about half of a marathon. This is a picture of her at the beginning, before she took off on a cold, snowy afternoon. I am always in awe of people who run marathons and I wish her the best of luck!

February 9, 2008

Day 40 - February 9, 2008

Tonight we went to Caliente Cab for dinner. Caliente is Spanish for hot, and seriously this dinner was a hot spot for discussion and debate. It is pretty interesting what a thin line there is between debating and fighting, but at the end of the day it gives you a much better idea of who people really are! Also FYI Caliente Cab is not my favorite Mexican place in the city at all, their food is just a little too bland for me.

February 8, 2008

Day 39 - February 8, 2008

Okay, I'm not usually much of a Bush basher, but this is a pretty funny cartoon. Oh candy hearts, so helpful!

February 7, 2008

Day 38 - February 7, 2008

I'm sorry but I cannot get enough of the whole Clinton v Obama drama. The two of them are probably the most photographed people in the country right now, I mean seriously they are every where. So when I was deciding on a picture of the day this week, this is kinda where I ended up! I really hope Obama wins, and until then it is awfully interesting to watch!

February 6, 2008

Day 37 - February 6, 2008

So I went over to hang out at Jen's apartment tonight and we got into a big discussion about how cocaine is really making a comeback in New York, random, but true. Anyway, we were thinking that was so 80's and Sara decided that she was going to demonstrate some of the other great things from the 80's which may or may not be making a comeback as well. Nice!

February 5, 2008

Day 36 - February 5, 2008

So I was really slow about putting up my picture for today, but here it is. This sign made me laugh. This is Football. This is New York City. Manhattan is such an odd place, where else do you get 3 million people to come to a Super Bowl Parade on a Tuesday, when no one was willing to give the Giants a chance on Saturday.

Also the exciting thing about today was Super Tuesday, and now that I live in a Super Tuesday state it was even more exciting. I got up early and went to the polling place to cast my ballot for Obama! He didn't win New York, but he only lost Brooklyn by 1 point and I like to think that I was a part of that!!

February 4, 2008

Day 35 - February 4, 2008

So I have to admit this is probably my least favorite day of the year. I don't enjoy February really at all for a multitude of reasons, is it weird to have a least favorite month? Today's reason is that there is no more football that matters until September, which is pretty sad! Anyway, it helped this morning that it was snowing. I love when it snows in Manhattan, it feels just like you are in the middle of a snow globe! This is the view from my "office" which is currently on the 5th floor of the Saint Ignatius Loyola Grammar School which is being remodeled. The snow didn't accumulate enough to turn into anything, but it still was nice enough to get a picture of the day out of!

February 3, 2008

Day 34 - February 3, 2008

It is the best day of the year, and by that I mean Super Bowl Sunday!! Anyway, I decided to make some great Super Bowl food and have some of my friends over. I live in a studio, so I hadn't had a party before this, but it worked out great and was a lot of fun. This was my favorite picture that my crazy friends took. It doesn't really show anything about football, but you can see my apartment a little and the great football plates I got for the occasion. Unbelievably the Giants actually won this one, so even though it got a little dull in the middle the game had an incredible finish. Oh Eli, how could I ever have doubted thee! Not to mention all of those commentaries that said the Patriots wouldn't mean anything if they went 18-1 now have something to talk about until Super Bowl XVIII!

February 2, 2008

Day 33 - February 2, 2008

This is what happens when you let someone else take your picture, you don't always end up with the focal point that you want.

At any rate, we nice night. Jay freaked out a little bit about being 24, Kumi and Alex had their first date, and poor Jeet lost his wallet last night and had to get into the bar with his passport.
Day 32 - February 1, 2008

Well, this is not New York, due to global warming it doesn't actually snow here. Just kidding, it did snow last year in March, so we'll see. This picture was actually taken after an ice storm in China. My friend, Michi's, brother is actually living in China currently and he sent her a slide show with a whole bunch of pictures of this storm. She suggested that one of them be the picture of the day, and I certainly agree, especially since my day entailed walking through the pouring rain and living off of cough drops so that I can recover from a cold. This is clearly 100 times more interesting than that. Thanks Michelle!
